James Cooper

Grew up on a mainly arable farm in Lincolnshire. Presently, James farms 130 acres part time with his wife Sarah, son and daughter, Ben and Laura, at Dacre (between Harrogate and Skipton, North Yorkshire) on hill land rising to just short of 1000 feet. The farm manages a herd of pedigree cattle, Tomschoice Limousins, producing quality bulls and females to sell as breeding stock. The herd was started in 1996 with the purchase of one in-calf cow and the herd name comes from this purchase. She was the pick of their friend Tom, who has since sadly passed away, 'Tom's choice'.

James and his family began pedigree breeding in 1996. As well as farming, James is a part time Director at Ripon Select Foods Ltd, flour millers and food ingredient manufacturers, where he has worked since 1981. James and his family are passionate about cattle breeding and intensely proud of the pedigree ‘Tomschoice’ Limousin herd, producing quality, high genetic merit livestock with performance recording and a high health status.

The farm business has won a number of National Championships, including Reserve Champion Herd, BLCS National Herd Competition 2011; Championship in the North East Limousin Breeders’ Club contest 2011; and with Tomschoice Elgar, which made Breed Champion and Reserve Junior Interbreed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2010.

James has an MBA from Leeds University, is a Council Member of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Council Member of the British Limousin Cattle Society, Director of Yorkshire Events Centre and has been a past Director of the Food & Drink Federation.

The family hosts an annual barbeque and stock-judging event for the Harrogate and District branch of the YFC. James has also contributed towards the organisation of extra workshops and competitions for young Limousin enthusiasts in the various regions, and also has been a past President of the Young Limousin Breeders Club.

James has an endless fascination with cattle genetics and is looking forward to contributing his knowledge and expertise to the Advisory Group.
