James Hopwood

With an honours degree in Agriculture, Land and Farm Management, James’s career to date has focused on both the commercial and technical elements of crop production and the agricultural supply chain. James is currently Head of Agriculture at Wholecrop Marketing Ltd and is driving innovation, efficiency and sustainability in the sector through WCM Agriculture.

James is a full member of the BASIS professional register as well as being FACTS qualified. His passion for agriculture and the countryside has stemmed from being brought up on the family farm located south of York, UK, which is still managed by the Hopwood family today, recently diversifying into tourism and well and alternative cropping including industrial hemp for fiber production and pumpkins.  James has also taken up beekeeping as well as recently completing the Yorkshire marathon in support of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

James’s main interests focus on the sustainability and future of agriculture. As a result, James is fully involved with the activities of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society including the Farmer-Scientist Network, and as a steward at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Current Roles & Position

Future Farmers of Yorkshire – Integral role on the management committee of the FFY since its creation in 2010 to provide a network for young forward thinking individually involved in farming and associated industries. The group currently has a membership of over 800 and has gained great credibly as a voice for the future of agriculture both in Yorkshire and nationally. The networks strategic activities focus on professional development for the future of agriculture in the county and the way in which with the backing of the society we a tackling key area such as succession, business finance and marketing.

Farmer Scientist Network – Advisory Group Member - The Advisory Group brings senior and successful scientists and farmers together to form a new Farmer-Scientist Network. This platform of activity advises the Society and through the Society, advises policy makers in the UK and beyond on issues such as farming practices, food security, sustainable productivity and the ways in which new science and technology can solve problems and underpin innovation in agriculture.

Yorkshire Food Farming & Rural Network – Advisory Board Member - The Yorkshire Food, Farming & Rural Network is made up of local groups representing different areas of England, to identify and feedback local issues and concerns straight to the heart of Government, In order to make policies more rural-friendly.

Sustainable Futures Advisory Board - Sustainable Futures is cross-national and broadacre, linking global brands, food processors and farmers together along the supply chain. Our goal is to deliver more resilient and sustainable food and drink in the United Kingdom and beyond. Sustainable Futures was developed from experience gained through the significant Farexchange project, which was delivered over 20 new large scale collaboration supply chains of which that majority continue to operate today.

Bio Economy Development Fund Advisory Board – Sitting on the advisory board for the current development fund taking calls in the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding LEP.
