James Potter

Yorkshire Farmhouse Eggs based near Thirsk, North Yorkshire is a family business run by the Potter family. Established in 1980, the company’s main purpose is the production, packing and marketing of premium quality, high welfare free-range eggs. In particular, the growing demand for regionally produced free-range eggs under its ‘James Potter’ Yorkshire free-range egg brand. Through continued investment and determination the company has very recently become the largest free-range ‘only’ producer/packer in the UK, boasting the very latest production and packing systems.

Graduated from The Royal Agricultural College in 1997 with an Honours Degree in International Agribusiness Management, James joined the Family Poultry Business. In 1999, the family started marketing Potter Eggs to major retailers, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrison’s, doubling the business by purchasing a second farm in Sussex in 2000, a third farm in Yorkshire in 2002 and in 2009, establishing a partnership to also form the Wood Farm Free Range Eggs Ltd and leading to the current success of the businesses.

In 2007, the business saw the opportunity to utilise its existing infrastructure to establish a local food and drink sourcing, consolidation and distribution company in Yorkshire – The Local Sourcing Company (formerly known as Yorkshire Farmers Market). Working with over 40 suppliers and 250 lines the Company provides a route to market for local food and drink producers wishing to supply larger retailers. Negotiations are currently under way with the Sainsbury's regional team.

The family business has been recognised by many awards, including in 2013, The Good Farm Animal Welfare Award by Compassion in World Farming. A Member of the RSPCA Freedom Food Scheme, he also sits on the British Egg Industry Council (Lion Scheme) which sets standards and promotes British eggs.

Committed to a number of outreach projects, the business routinely hosts schools and agricultural visits to the farm and works closely within the industry to drive forward quality and welfare improvements.

James set up a unique partnership in 2012 with the independent charity, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, in which his family business is committed to donating 1p per dozen eggs sold to help ensure the continuation of the Air Ambulance vital work for the community.

Whilst the business has grown substantially since its early beginnings, it is still run as a genuine family business with a passion for producing the finest quality free-range eggs and delivering the highest level of service.
