Chief Executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS), a charity based in Harrogate that supports and promotes farming and the countryside.
Nigel was educated in County Durham and attended the University of Newcastle upon Tyne graduating with a BA Honours Degree in Politics. He trained with Deloitte Haskins and Sells and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1984.
After qualifying Nigel worked for Ropner PLC as a Group Accountant, graduating to Chief Accountant and Finance Director in 1994. He gained his expertise by becoming Finance Director and Company Secretary at Merewood Ltd in Cumbria and also at MLM Technologies Ltd near Wakefield. In 2001 Nigel joined the Yorkshire Agricultural Society as Head of Finance and in 2002 became Chief Executive.
Nigel is a past Governor of Askam Bryan College (equivalent of non Executive Director) from 2002 until 2011. He was also a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the College from 2003 and was appointed Chairman of that Committee in 2005, as well as a member of the Remuneration Committee.
From 2007 to 2013, Nigel was a Trustee of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust, a charity encouraging farmers personal development by travel and study. From 2011 to present he has also been a Board Member of the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.
Dedicated to the work of the Society, other activities within the YAS portfolio include; Fodder (regional food shop and café, supplying Yorkshire produce), YEC Ltd (large scale conferences and exhibitions), Pavilions of Harrogate (weddings, dinners & meetings). YAS is most well known for running the Great Yorkshire Show.
